A PayFac (Payment Facilitator) like Stripe or Square onboards merchants under the PayFac's own master MID, which enables instant signup but also instant freezes. A direct processor (like Fiserv, Worldpay, Adyen) is the technology and acquiring infrastructure that actually moves money. ISOs offer stability and dedicated underwriting; PayFacs offer speed at the cost of risk concentration.
